Boston Property Management: Living Off-Campus

Living off-campus can be a challenge for college students.  Those who live on campus get to party more and get a lot of perks. However living off-campus means more privacy and you have more freedom.  One has to remember that living off-campus has its own set of challenges. You need to have realistic expectations and be flexible with everyone.

Set the tone

You need to state everything beforehand so that there are no issues with your roommates. Let them know what you expect of them and what you don’t want to see.  If you don’t let them know what your boundaries are, you can’t expect them to get it right. So let them know that you want a clean house and that you don’t want to be disturbed at night.  A clear line of communication sets the mood for everyone. At the same time they will also have their own set of rules. So you need to ensure you follow them as well.

Speak up

Don’t just hold anything inside and let it fester till it snowballs into something huge. It is better to clear the air and talk it out before it grows into resentment.  This is the best way to avoid conflict and tension. So set some rules for addressing household issues and have a weekly meeting so that there are no grievances.

Share the burden

A good shared home is where all the household members share the household responsibilities. Don’t shirk your responsibilities and do your work on time. Ensure that everyone gets their fair share of work so that there is no resentment. Split up the work using a chore chart where chores are rotated on a weekly basis. This is the best way of ensuring that roommates don’t end up fighting.

Compromise

The best way to get along with your roommates is to compromise from time to time. You can’t expect to be rigid with the rules all the time as people will not be willing to negotiate on that. There are certain times when you must give in as you don’t want others to be mad at you.  So if there is a minor matter don’t let it bother you because you will have to spend more time with your roommates.

If you can obey all these rules, you will be able to enjoy your off-campus life.
