Boston Property Management: Downsizing to a smaller home

Moving can always cause stress but then moving to a smaller home is a bigger challenge. It is a huge psychological change where you are forced to accept a new change in your lifestyle. This post takes a look at how you can successfully downsize your home.

Make a List

Document a list of all your belongings the old school way. Write everything down on a list so you know what you own. You can also take pictures of all your items so that there is a record of it. If you want you can get a detailed inventory of your list, so that you know the value of each item and whether you want to ship those items.

Boston Property Management: Draw a floor plan

If you plan your interior design in advance, you won’t have to spend a lot of time and energy on relocating items you won’t be able to use. Get the accurate measurements which will help you see which ones can fit inside.

Consider all circumstances

It doesn’t make sense to take warm items to a cold climate or vice versa. So if you have winter items, you won’t need them in a hot climate. If you are moving from a house to an apartment, there will be no need for certain items such as a lawnmower. You should also calculate the cost of moving certain items. If it tends to be more expensive, then you can just buy a new item when you get there.

Organize your belongings

Try this time tested idea where you go through all your belongings and sort them out into keep, sell or giveaway piles. This will make your job much easier. However you will be tempted to keep everything in the keep pile. You will have to be very thorough when you go through this. So the giveaways can be given to charity or family and friends. The throw away pile will consist of items which can’t give away.
Once you have the keep pile, you should label and organize them properly. This will make it easy for you to find everything when you reach home. Ensure that you get rid of the unneeded items so that they don’t get in the way of your move.

Stand Strong

There will be a lot of temptation to try and keep items or you may end up making a mistake. You just need to stay strong and get through with it. Once you go ahead with it there won’t be any issues.
