How to secure your Boston Apartment: Part 1

Secure your Boston Apartment

The downside of Boston apartments  is the security issues which come with it. If you are renting an apartment, the probability of getting robbed is high because of the high volume of foot traffic. The following guide will give you tips on how to keep your apartment safe.

Before Moving In

1. Research the Local Crime rate

Just because you have found your perfect apartment does not mean that the area is immune from crime.  There are plenty of websites on the internet such as Spotcrime.com, CrimeReports.com. Talk to the local residents and ask them about the local crime data. It would also be good to talk to the local police. This should be helpful in allowing you to decide whether you want to go ahead or not.

2. Check out the General upkeep of the property

If you signs that your new apartment has not been maintained properly you can tell that the landlord is not serious about apartment security.

3. Lighting

If your building has poor lighting and dark areas you know that it’s a security risk. Thieves/Robbers will always attack target buildings where there is poor lighting as it’s easier to rob. So make sure you check the entire building at night time to get a better feel of it. The more lighting there is the fewer places an offender can hide.

4. Check Apartment Entrances

An important factor is the security level of the building. Check to see if the building requires a passcode, key or buzz-in access. Each has its own merits and demerits.  However this is good as this provides one with more security options.

5. Door Locks

An important thing to remember about renting a new place is to check the door locks. It is a good idea to get the apartment manager to replace them with brand new locks. Usually they replace them with old ones but then it is not helpful because anyone with access to the old locks can gain entry. So that’s why it’s important  to ensure that new locks are issued  for a Boston Apartment so that there is a peace of mind.

6. Peephole

The peephole is the greatest invention in history as it allows you to see who is outside your door before you open it. Even if you don’t have one, make sure you are allowed to install one.

7. Check Window Locks

The more secure the window locks, the better you can protect your property. There are certain window locks which can be manipulated from outside. So make sure that they are fast and secure.

8. Fire Escapes

Fire escapes can be a double edged sword. They are helpful as they allow you to escape in the event of an emergency but can also be used by burglars. If your apartment has a fire escape, make sure it’s not on the ground as it can attract intruders.

We hope you these simple tips will help you secure your Boston Apartment.
