Make a Plan

You can choose between raised beds or in the ground. If you want to use a raised bed, then get treated wood. It will be a good choice if it is rot resistant. Use some rodent proof cover on it so that it is secure. Add the right amount of topsoil and compost, after which you are ready to go.
In the event that you are planning a garden in the ground, make sure that the area is weed free. You don’t want the weeds to interfere with your garden. It is important to ensure that the topsoil is rich and well drained to prevent root rot. If there is any grass remove it and add compost it. Don’t overdo it as it can be overkill for the garden. Around 5 pounds of compost per 100 feet is perfectly fine.
Certain types of vegetables grow well together as not only do they save space but they also improve flavor and prevent pest problems.
Corn and pole beans are a good match. Beans add nitrogen to the soil while the corn thrives on it. The corn will also allow the beans to climb on it.
Lettuce and tall flowers work well together. You can choose flowers which are tall (and grow in your region). They will form the shade for your lettuce. The good thing is that the lettuce will receive the morning sun but will be shaded in the afternoon.
